Rejected by the Franciscans, he became a Trappist monk under a vow of silence who maintained an immense correspondence with people around the world (including the Dalai Lama and Thick Nhat Hanh). He lived half his life “in the world” and the half of his life “away from the world,” and then managed to elec- trocute himself in a Bangkok hotel the first time he was away from his monastery. His body was flown back to the US in a military aircraft that normally carried atomic weapons (he was a strong opponent of the nuclear arms race). DISCUSS THE FOLLOWING: Why is it that Merton (and many others) find that they must withdraw from the world in order to engage it more fully?
